Chinese Embassy financially contributes to the welfare of disabled children

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China donated a sum of one million rupees to the Le Reduit Appeal Fund. In this context, the State House in collaboration with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the China Cultural Centre organised a donation ceremony on 16th November at the State House Réduit in the presence of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Mauritius, Mr Sun Gongyi and other personalities.

The fund has been raised through the ballet Le Lac des Cygnes performed by the Tianjin troupe on November 3 and 5 2017 at the J & J auditorium. On the same occasion, Rs 500 000 was donated to associations working for the welfare of children with disabilities namely Association des Parents pour la Réhabilitation d’infirmes Moteurs and Association pour les handicaps de Malherbes.

In her address, President Gurib-Fakim stated that in the context of the celebrations marking the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Mauritius diplomatic relations, the generous act aims to further reinforce bilateral and economic cooperation between Mauritius and the People’s Republic of China.

For his part, Ambassador Gongyi highlighted the long-standing relationship that Mauritius and China share and expressed keen interest to consolidate existing links while moving to new sectors of development and avenues of cooperation.

Diplomatic relations between Mauritius and China dates back to 1972. Since then the relationship between the two countries has evolved remarkably with China being a strategic partner to Mauritius. China has since then been providing both technical and financial support for the economic development of the country.
